SAMI

The Sydney-AAO Multi-object Integral-field spectrograph puts 13 fused hexabundles, each containing 61 fibres, across a square-degree field of view. SAMI will provide a comprehensive spatially-resolved view of galaxy evolution.

Overview

Project Overview

The SAMI Galaxy Survey began in March 2013, with the intention of creating a large survey of ~3400 galaxies across a large range of environments. Observations complete in May 2018, with just over 3000 galaxies observed. The key science goals of the SAMI Survey are to answer the following questions:

  • What is the physical role of environment in galaxy evolution?
  • What is the relationship between stellar mass growth and angular momentum development in galaxies?
  • How does gas get into and out of galaxies, and how does this drive star formation?

The data for the SAMI Galaxy Observatory is being collected using SAMI, the Sydney-Australian-Astronomical-Observatory Multi-object Integral-Field Spectrograph. SAMI is a brand new instrument on the 4-meter Anglo-Australian Telescope at Siding Spring Observatory. Integral-field spectroscopy (IFS) allows a unique view of how stars and gas zoom around inside distant galaxies because we collect dozens of spectra across the entire face of each galaxy.

DR2

The SAMI Galaxy Survey Data Release 2 (DR2) includes reduced observations, stellar population, stellar kinematic and ionised gas property measurements for 1559 galaxies This constitutes all galaxies observed in the GAMA regions up to July 2017. Documentation for this release can be found at: Data Release 2. DR2 is fully described in Scott et al. (submitted).

Quick and Easy Data Access

  • IFS data cubes and all 2D data products can be accessed through the AstroObject page. Please see the "How do I" instructions on the right-hand side of the page for an easy guide on how to download the data.
  • Catalogue data can be obtained through the DataCentral's Query Service. Examples for simple SQL or ADQL queries are given on the right-hand side of the page
  • With the Single-Object-Viewer (SOV), you can inspect all SAMI DR2 products for each individual source in DR2.
  • The Schema Browser is there to help you find specific data products.

We do not recommend attempting to download all data at once as the total size of the SAMI DR2 dataset is approximately 150 Gb.

Additional data products will be added to DR2 in early September 2018. These additional products will consist of emission line measurements from aperture spectra (in table format) and star formation rate maps (and associated products) for the binned data.

DR1

The SAMI Galaxy Survey Data Release 1 (DR1) includes observations and ionised gas property measurements for 772 galaxies. This constitutes all galaxies observed in the GAMA regions up to June 2015. The data can be accessed via V1 of Data Central here. Documentation for this release can be found here. DR1 is fully described in Green et al. (2017).

You have two options to browse the catalogue. If you are interested in a single object, click the ID in the table. If you want to download data products for multiple objects, select your targets using the table filters, and then choose the products to download. To access data via a command line interface, read the V1 documentation on bulk data download.

About

The SAMI Galaxy Survey is an integral field spectroscopy survey targeting ~3000 nearby galaxies spanning a range of environments. It has measured the spatially resolved stellar and gas properties of each of these galaxies, providing a wealth of information on every object.
