6dFGS

The 6dF Galaxy Survey (6dFGS) has mapped the nearby universe over nearly half the sky. Its 136,304 spectra have yielded 110,256 new extragalactic redshifts and a new catalogue of 125,071 galaxies.

6dFGS Spectra

Data Products

6dFGS provided spectra in two different format:

  • A table stored within a FITS file
  • A multi-extension FITS file, containing multiple observations, as well as thumbnail images of the region from 2MASS and SuperCOSMOS

Data Central serves out the table-based spectra unmodified.

For the multi-extension FITS file, Data Central has split these up, removing the 2MASS and SuperCOSMOS images, and serving each observation separately (which is how the GAMA survey provides data from 6dFGS). If you want the original, combined files, please ask at our service desk.

SOV and Downloadable Data

The spectra within 6dFGS can be split into two groups: those which in the original target catalogue, and those outside of it. Those within the target catalogue start with 'g', those outside start with 'c'—both can be accessed via the SOV or any of the other services.

Note that we use a custom table as the source catalogue for this reason (adding the additional sources to the list within TARGET), rather than TARGET, if you think you have encountered an issue due to this, please let us know via our service desk.
